I was excited to be going home after spending four months away at college, and I was looking forward to spending the holidays with my family and friends. When my parents heard that my roommate, Sarah, was going to be spending the Holidays alone in our dorm back in Boston, they insisted that she come back to Minnesota with me. We couldn’t get Sarah a ticket for the final leg of the trip to Duluth so we landed in Minneapolis and rented a car to drive the last 175 miles up to my hometown in the Twin Ports. Since we were driving from Minneapolis, we offered to pick up our next door neighbor who was flying into town from his college in Denver around the same time we were getting into Minneapolis. Looking outside, it did not look like December 23 in Minnesota. A steady rain fell outside with the temperature hovering in the mid-thirties. I still had hopes for a white Christmas because the forecast was calling for this mess to change into snow late tonight. While Sarah waited for our luggage in the baggage claims area at the Lindbergh Terminal in Minneapolis, I checked on the gate and time that Chris’ flight would arrive from Denver. I returned to the baggage carousel just in time to see Sarah struggling with our last bag. “Have you heard from Chris? Is his flight on time?” Sarah inquired. “It was delayed a little over an hour out of Denver, but it’s in the air now, and he should be here in about an hour,” I informed her. “Do you want to get something to drink while we wait?” ...
asked Sarah. We maneuvered through the huge holiday crowds in the terminal and hauled our luggage into Surdyk’s Flights and ordered drinks while we waited for Chris to arrive. “What’s the weather doing?” Sarah asked as she sipped on her Spicy Bloody Mary. “Are we going to be all right driving to Duluth tonight?” “Not to worry,” I pointed out, “Why do you think my Dad rented us a Jeep Patriot? It will get us there!” I stared into Sarah’s eyes; they always had melted me. I hoped we could find some time alone again on this vacation to continue our special close relationship. I felt Sarah’s hand on my thigh as she said, “I was thinking the same thing Jenny.” She always could read my mind. We finished our drinks and rechecked the flight information monitors and headed down to the baggage claims area to meet Chris. We arrived at the designated carousel just as Chris did. I rushed over to greet him with a hug and a kiss. “This is my roommate Sarah,” I introduced. “It is a pleasure to meet you Sarah. You are just as beautiful as my little neighbor here!” They shook hands and then Chris exclaimed, “Let’s get my luggage and get out of this chaos and get on the road. I have had a tough day!” We patiently waited, watching suitcases and boxes slowly parade by us, as we looked for Chris’ bag. Finally, after thirty-five minutes, the area was empty except for a bag of skis going around in a lonely circuit. “Well, a perfect day, a perfect flight, and a perfect end,” Chris sarcastically mumbled. ...
