looking at him, her expression neutral. I got her attention. “What do you say, babe? You want to go throw stuff for our little dynamo for a while, or should we take off?” She shrugged noncommittally, but he again wiped his hands on his pants and stood up before he spoke. “Yeah, we should probably be going too.” He turned and yelled for his son and their dog. “Petey! Jake! C’mon, guys, let’s go!” They both turned and started toward us, but after several steps the boy stopped, and then raised his foot and looked at his shoe. I laughed. “Looks like Jake just stepped on the canine version of a landmine.” Greg looked over at them and swore under his breath. “Fuck! – and Jake’s the dog; my son’s name is Peter.” “Sorry, my mistake.” I was grinning, enjoying his frustration. He quickly ended my amusement. “Goddammit, Petey! I told you to be careful – now you’ve got dog shit all over your fucking shoe!” Petey, for his part, looked properly chagrined…and maybe a little bit frightened. It was absolutely none of my business, but I butted in anyhow. “Greg, hey! Relax, man – take it easy on the kid! It’s just a little dog crap – and you are at a dog park, after all. I retrieved the paper towels and, when Petey got close, picked him up under his arms and set him on the end of the bench, sideways. “Hi, Petey. I’m Davey – would you like a little help cleaning up that messy shoe of yours?” He looked at me solemnly, his beautiful blue eyes wide and curious, and began to chew on a finger as he nodded. I laughed, and proceeded to clean up his shoe, using a little of our water to wet a paper towel to complete the job, and dropping all of the used towels into a plastic bag. I wiped my hands with a wet wipe, and then tousled his hair. “There you go, buddy! Good as new, no more mess.” He grinned, and I squatted down in front of him so that we were at the same level. “You know what, Petey? Grown-ups have an expression that we say for this kind of thing, when something like that happens. You know what it is?” I saw Alli eyeing me warily as he shook his head. I smiled at him. “When stuff like that happens, grown-ups just say ‘Poop happens!’, and just go right on, like no big deal – ‘cause sometimes these things happen, and it's no big deal - easy to fix, right?” He nodded, smiling, and I laughed. “So just remember, buddy, when bad stuff happens sometimes, just say ‘poop happens’, and don’t worry about it, okay?” He giggled. “Okay! Thank you ...
