I couldn’t help but smile at my reflection in the polished steel doors of the elevator. After all, I felt like the luckiest girl on the planet. Today began my internship with Dewey, Cheatham & Howe. I was a second-year law student and had been chosen for a ten-week internship with the prestigious law firm. Not only would I gain valuable legal work experience, but I would also be paid $30,000. And with my school debt, I could really use the money. Using the reflection from the elevator door, I rechecked my look. My biggest challenge in getting ready for work was choosing the right makeup. I wanted to look competent and professional, but I was by no means a bare-faced beauty. I had to use some make-up. Besides, studies have shown that women who wear makeup are more likely to achieve career advancement. The trick was finding a look that subtly stated proficient, instead of screaming slut. As I walked down the hall, I contemplated all the advantages of having such a prominent mentor. Entering the outer office, I introduced myself to his secretary, “Hi, I’m Megan Greene.” The secretary was a middle-aged black woman who insisted that I call her Mrs. Wilson. She informed that I was to address all the firm’s employees by their title and last name. Nodding my understanding, I stood before her desk as she continued to brief me on the do's and don’ts found in the firm’s policy manual and unofficially by its corporate culture. “Miss Greene, you will be working for the toughest associate attorney at this firm. If you are successful, you will have a resume, enhancing recommendation that will launch your legal career. If you fail, you might as well quit law school and find another profession.” Stunned, I stuttered, “Fail?” “Mr. Stone has a reputation as a no-nonsense attorney. In fact, his nickname is ‘Hardball Harry.’ He has ...
