When I was a teenager I was a girl scout. I didn't particularly want to be a girl scout but was made to go by my parents. So for nearly two years I was made to go every Friday night when the other girls my age were going to the local youth club disco and smoking and so on. I completely hated it. I particularly hated Richard the scout leader. He was far too nice and pleasant and supportive for his own good. So much so that he lets us scouts walk all over him. He was so nice he was all the things a girl my age hated. Every time he spoke about being nice to others and always being prepared to do a good turn I'd roll my eyes. His daughter, Joy, was anything but. She was a nasty spoiled rotten piece of work. She was the same age as me and pretended to be angelic and good but was just downright unpleasant. She could always twist a knife in you while smiling perfectly and lovingly, then have you apologize for bleeding all over the place. She could bully and manipulate and always walk away leaving the room believing it was the victims fault. I hated her. She made fun of my acne and the braces on my teeth. She also teased me because I was the only girl not wearing make up. My parents wouldn't let me as they thought it was silly wearing makeup with a scout uniform. I watched this older man as he worked away with the younger guys painting and papering and so on. He was as pleasant and friendly as he always had been and I found myself feeling guilty for how I loathed him all those years earlier. He was irritating he was just nice. On their last day in our home I was making the decorators tea when, alone in the kitchen with Richard I told him who I was and asked if he remembered me. His face lit up and he got excited as he recognized me almost immediately. He seemed to just melt in front of me this wonderful lovely man. The other guys worked on the rest of that day themselves as we talked over old times, names and people long since forgotten as we chatted about life since then. Things hadn't been so great for poor Richard. He ended up having to give up scout work because of Joy's behaviour towards others. She had been caught stealing from the tuck shop and had to be barred from the club. As her dad poor Richard felt he couldn't really stay as club leader. He seemed so sad about that. Later he'd lost his business in the recession during the nineties and ended up working for one of the guys he used to hire. Then, sadly his wife had died a few years ago. Nowadays, kind of semi retired as he put it, he was just helping out a friend from time to time painting and decorating just for a ...
