~Chapter 6~ I walked into my house around four in the morning. I turned my phone on, while getting ready for work. It chimed with a text message. ‘Sorry, my phone died.’ Courtney texted me. I laughed when I realized that not only did he not answer my text about the hotel, but that his phone conveniently died mid-conversation. I tried calling Courtney, he didn’t answer. “Good morning Dr. Barnes.” I said. “Morning Kelly, how are you?” “I am good, am I working with you tonight?” I asked. “It looks that way, I am hoping for a quiet evening,” “It’s supposed to rain, not sure if that will be accomplish, the way these people drive out here.” I commented while putting my purse in my locker and pulling my jacket off. ‘Hey, sorry about last night’ ‘What hotel are you staying at?’ ‘Comfort Inn and Suites’ Courtney responded. ‘So…. Your phone died and you didn’t call me back?’ ‘By the time we got here, I was exhausted, I put it on the charger and I fell asleep.’ ‘SMH’ ‘What? You know I had a long drive.’ Courtney reasoned. ‘It’s fine, enjoy the expo.’ ‘What time are you working?’ I pondered the question, I figured he was asking for a reason. ‘7am to 7pm, possibly overtime’ ‘Oh okay’ ‘Yeah.’ “Hey Kelly, do you want to grab something to eat? I am in the mood for Cheesecake Factory.” Diane, another nurse, said. “Sure, you want to drive?” I asked. “I can, no problem.” I headed with Diane, to Cheesecake Factory. We decided on the location over at Lenox Mall, it wasn’t too far from work. ...
She parked her car and as soon as I got out, I spotted Courtney’s car. I knew my husband’s car. For one, he had a UGA sticker on the back windshield. In the car, hanging from the rearview mirror were the beads we got when we were in New Orleans. I ran my hand through my hair, looked around. “You ok?” Diane asked. “Yeah.” I smiled. I realized Courtney was not in Savannah. He could be anywhere, in the mall or in one of the restaurants. I had no idea. We walked inside of the Cheesecake Factory and got a table in the back. I could see the door from our table. Diane was busy talking about her upcoming wedding that I pretty much tuned her out. I was torn. On one hand, I wanted to see Courtney, on the other, I was silently praying that I was wrong, and he was in Savannah. Just as the waiter finished taking our order, I looked up and there he was. He didn’t see me. He walked in, no ring on his finger and he was not alone. I looked at the woman he walked in with. She definitely was not a co-worker. She was pretty. She was about 5’6, maybe 280 pounds, long dark hair. I figured it was a weave. She was wearing a tight dress and heels. She had an amazing body, curves for days. As much as it hurt, I understood what he saw in her. I watched as he opened the door for her, they waited patiently to be seated. He had his head buried in his cell phone, oblivious to the people around him. She was busy pointing at the cheesecake in the display window, laughing, touching his arm. I couldn’t move. I ...
